Example: three blurbs from the whole of Pride and Prejudice
We opened the complete Project Gutenberg text of Pride and Prejudice, 128,755 words, chose Romance and Back cover, and pressed the button. These are the three blurbs, unedited. None of them gives away who marries whom.
Option 1
A slight at a country assembly can be harder to forget than a declaration of love. Elizabeth Bennet has a quick mind, a sharp tongue, and little patience for Mr. Darcy, the wealthy, proud newcomer who dismisses her as not handsome enough to dance with. When his attention shifts, she sees no reason to revise her first judgment. Then George Wickham, an engaging officer, offers an account of Darcy’s past that seems to confirm everything she believes. At Longbourn, marriage is more than a question of affection: the family estate is entailed away from the Bennet daughters, and Mrs. Bennet is intent on securing their futures. As Jane’s hopes for Mr. Bingley falter and Elizabeth’s feelings become harder to name, every choice carries consequences for those she loves. Can Elizabeth trust her judgment when pride and prejudice may be clouding it?
141 words
Option 2
Elizabeth Bennet values her independence and trusts her quick judgment. She has little regard for Mr. Darcy, a wealthy gentleman whose pride and dismissive manners make him easy to dislike. When he declares his love, his proposal includes a judgment of her family that only confirms her refusal. Yet Elizabeth’s picture of him is complicated by his continued presence and by George Wickham, an appealing officer who describes a bitter history with Darcy. At Longbourn, the estate is entailed away from the Bennet daughters, and every marriage carries weight beyond romance. As Jane’s hopes for Mr. Bingley falter, Elizabeth must decide whether her certainty about the men around her is earned. The answer may change more than her opinion of one proud man. What will she see when she looks again?
131 words
Option 3
The Bennet sisters have little time to secure their futures. Mr. Bennet’s estate is entailed to a distant relation, leaving his five daughters with uncertain prospects, and Mrs. Bennet watches every eligible man who arrives in Hertfordshire. Jane’s growing attachment to Mr. Bingley offers hope, while Elizabeth’s sharp dislike of his friend, Mr. Darcy, keeps drawing her into uneasy encounters. Then Lydia’s reckless choices threaten to turn family gossip into lasting disgrace. Elizabeth must face the consequences of what she believes about Darcy and George Wickham, even as Jane’s happiness hangs in the balance. Money, reputation, and affection are bound together, and none of the Bennets can decide the future alone. Can Elizabeth read the people around her clearly enough to protect those she loves—and still choose a marriage on her own terms?

What makes a good blurb
Most advice agrees on the shape. A blurb opens with a hook, introduces one main character and what they want, shows what stands in the way and what they could lose, then stops on tension. Reedsy and Kindlepreneur both teach it this way. Kindlepreneur's line for it: "Think movie trailer, not book report."
- 1HookA slight at a country assembly can be harder to forget than a declaration of love.
- 2Main characterElizabeth Bennet has a quick mind, a sharp tongue, and little patience for Mr. Darcy, the wealthy, proud newcomer who dismisses her as not handsome enough to dance with.
- 3ConflictWhen his attention shifts, she sees no reason to revise her first judgment. Then George Wickham, an engaging officer, offers an account of Darcy’s past that seems to confirm everything she believes.

- 5Closing questionCan Elizabeth trust her judgment when pride and prejudice may be clouding it?
- Length: 150 to 200 words at most for a back cover (Jane Friedman, Reedsy); that is about all that fits on a paperback. The generator's Back cover setting aims a little under, 120 to 180 words, to leave room for your own line. BookBub keeps its promo-email blurbs under 50 words.
- Fiction is written in third person, present tense, and never reveals the ending.
- Nonfiction speaks to the reader and promises what they will get. Jane Friedman suggests three to five benefit bullet points.
- Name one or two characters at most. Readers can't hold more on a back cover.
- Skip the self-praise. "Gripping" and "unforgettable" are for reviewers to say.
Blurb, book description, synopsis or endorsement?
| Name | What it is | Ending revealed? | Typical length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blurb (back-cover copy) | Sales copy on the back of the book | Never | 150–200 words |
| Amazon book description | The same copy on your product page, with simple formatting | Never | Up to 4,000 characters |
| Synopsis | A plain summary of the whole plot for agents and publishers | Always | About 500 words (one page) |
| Endorsement (also called a blurb) | A quote from another author praising the book | No | One or two sentences |
And no, this has nothing to do with Blurb.com, the photo-book printer. Different kind of blurb.
Pasting your blurb into Amazon KDP
Amazon's KDP help page sets the rules for the description box. The generator shows each blurb's character count so you can check the first one at a glance.
- Limit: 4,000 characters.
- Formatting allowed: paragraphs, line breaks, bold, italic, underline, lists, and headings h4 to h6 only. Amazon does not support h1 to h3, whatever some guides say.
- Not allowed: reviews, quotes or testimonials; spoilers; emojis; web addresses, emails or phone numbers; prices and time-limited offers; keyword lists.
- Review quotes belong in the Editorial Reviews section of Amazon Author Central instead. BookBub's own tests found quotes lift clicks in its promo emails, which is a different place with different rules.
Blurbs for a translated edition
A blurb translated word for word often sounds stiff, because hooks and idioms don't travel. Writing it fresh in the target language works better. Pick the language under "Write it in". Here is a real example: the whole of Frankenstein, Short length, written in Spanish.
Option 1
62 words
Have a native speaker read it before it goes on the cover. Then, if you need the book itself in Spanish, translate the whole manuscript in one upload.

FAQ
Book blurb questions
Is the book blurb generator free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no ads. A quick Cloudflare check keeps bots out; most people never see it. If many people use it in the same hour you may be asked to try again a little later.
How long should a book blurb be?
150 to 200 words for a back cover is the usual advice (Jane Friedman, Reedsy). Short promo blurbs, like BookBub's emails, stay under 50 words. Amazon allows up to 4,000 characters but readers only see the first few lines before “Read more”.
What is the difference between a blurb and a synopsis?
A blurb sells the book and never reveals the ending. A synopsis summarizes the whole plot, ending included, for agents and publishers. We have a separate synopsis generator for that.
Can I use these blurbs on Amazon KDP?
Yes. They contain no quotes, links or spoilers, which Amazon forbids. Check the length against the 4,000-character limit and edit the wording so it sounds like you.
Does it work for nonfiction?
Yes. Choose Memoir or Non-fiction as the genre and the blurbs speak to the reader about what they will get from the book.
Can it write the blurb in another language?
Yes, in 70 languages. Pick one under “Write it in”. The blurb is written fresh in that language rather than translated from English.
Will it give away my ending?
It is told never to reveal the ending, the culprit or a twist, even when it reads your whole manuscript. Read each blurb before you use it, all the same.
Is my manuscript stored?
No. Your text is sent to the AI model to write the blurbs and is not saved by PageTranslate.
